To create a voice prompt for your phone system, you can choose voices that support styles ranging from customer service to neutral. If you're voicing a dialogue between friends, voices that support friendly or chatty styles would be suitable.

As you understand, the same voice can sound different. You can make the voice sound predominantly neutral but transition to a formal style at certain moments or even shout (because life can be unpredictable).

How does it work? When you select a voice for text-to-speech, pay attention to the icon with masks. Those are the voices that support styles. If you want to see only voices that support styles, you can choose the "Styles" filter, and you will see all the voices that have styles.

Next, if you hover over the icon with masks, you will see a list of all the styles supported by the voice. Some voices support 1-2 styles, while others support around 20.

Choose a voice that you like.

Now, in your project, click on the voice, and you will see a window that displays all the information about the voice: its name, the platform that created it, the effects supported by the voice, and most importantly, the styles. Here you can click on the styles and choose the style that the voice should primarily use for text-to-speech.

Why do we say "primarily"? Because you can change the voice style for individual paragraphs. For example, you may want the main text to be voiced by a neutral voice, but specific paragraphs to be read in a friendly or formal style.

To change the style for a particular paragraph, click inside the paragraph, open the effects panel (dark icon on the right side of the screen), and select the desired style. Now that paragraph will sound in that style. You can listen to the paragraph and try applying different styles to it one by one. This way, you can achieve the exact effect you desire.

If everything satisfies you, click the Play button in the upper right corner of the screen, and after a few seconds, the entire text will be converted, and you can listen to how it sounds. If you're satisfied, you can save the audio in the format you need.

And most importantly, experiment with styles, choose different voices, and try how they sound. It may be that you're accustomed to a particular voice and use it for voicing your texts, and that's great if it suits you. However, it's always worth remembering that to make a computer voice more realistic, you need to make some adjustments. Change styles, try applying effects, adjust pitch, speed, and emphasis. It is through such iterations that you can make your audio sound the most realistic.

So, what’s the big deal about dialogue, and why is it so important?

I’m sure you’ve heard writers talk about dialogue that is too “on the nose” and the importance of having “sharp and tight” dialogue.  But what does all of that even mean? 
If you have been wanting to learn more about writing effective dialogue, then this article is for you. We’re going to break down the definition of dialogue, its importance, and some easy tips that will jumpstart you into writing powerful and dynamic dialogue. So, let’s start with the basics.


**WHAT IS DIALOGUE?**

Dialogue can be best described as any spoken word. It's the conversational exchange between two or more people. Dialogue can be specific to different regions or cultures like slang and dialects. It can even include jargon for specific groups and industries. Dialogue can be formal or informal, serious, or playful. Effective dialogue is used to advance the plot or provide information about the world and the characters which ultimately pushes the story forward.



Writers can use dialogue to reveal the overall tone of the piece. For example, dialogue in a comedic script might move at a quicker pace and have lots of set ups for jokes, while the dramatic script might use more foreshadowing in the dialogue to set up the suspense. 

No one wants to hear characters endlessly chatter on and on with no real point. That can get real boring, real quick, and you may lose your audience because the pace slows down when we hear a character relaying information that does not advance the plot. Though dialogue can be quite interesting, it can still lead nowhere. To avoid this common mistake, be sure that the driving force behind the dialogue always reveals new information. 

Now, let’s look at some examples.


**PULP FICTION**

Quentin Tarantino is known for having superb dialogue in his films. Because every word has a purpose, not a syllable of dialogue is wasted leaving room for his dialogue to be riddled with provocative subtext and foreshadowing. If you want to study the dialogue between characters who are slick and cool that slowly build tension through their vigorous bouts of verbal sparring, then study Pulp Fiction.  

In this scene, Jules and Vincent have come to confront a group of college-aged boys after they fail to pay their debts, but they keep things light as a way to toy with their victims before things become more sinister. Notice how the dialogue feels natural, and each character has their own distinct voice. Take note of how Tarantino keeps the dialogue light and fun even given the dire stakes of the situation, creating contrast and humor without piling on the jokes.

Notice the quick pace in not just the speed in which the actor is talking, but the flow of the dialogue and how it is the witty nature of the dialogue that provokes the speed and makes this scene so dynamic. In this scene, Mark Zuckerburg is on a date, but he quickly verbally overpowers his date, Erica, with his constant changing of topic and snarky remarks lead to the abrupt ending of the date.

**3 EASY TIPS TO WRITE EFFECTIVE DIALOGUE**

- **Write dialogue that is true to your character’s voice.**  Art imitates life. Your characters should sound like real people. Keep in mind that who they are (education, socioeconomic status) and who they are speaking to (friend, parent, spouse, child, colleague, boss) play a major role in how they speak. Also be mindful that many people do not speak in complete sentences and most people use contractions. Punctuation must also feel natural. All of these aspects help to make each character’s voice unique.

- **The dialogue should advance the plot and serve a purpose.**  Every detail of a screenplay matters. Characters should be intentional with their words and the dialogue should always push the story forward. Remember to show, don't tell.  If we don’t see it in action or hear it in dialogue, we don’t receive the information. Also, because screenwriting is a visual medium, in most cases it is more entertaining to see a moment than to hear about it in hindsight, especially if it is a moment that helps/hurts the character from reaching their goal. - **Write realistic dialogue that sounds natural through subtext.**  Study how people talk and how they form their sentences. This will aid in making sure that the dialogue comes off as natural and realistic. Avoid dialogue that is too on the nose. This means that character’s are saying exactly what they’re thinking leaving no room for tension. Think about how your characters can say one thing but mean another or not say anything at all and show their thoughts through action, similar to how we interact in the real world.

To bring your dialogue to life, select the voice style that resonates with your actor's role and the mood of the dialogue. Choose from a range of styles, such as narration, newscast, friendly, or even angry.

Consider the dramatic impact of a chilling ghost story narrated in a suspenseful voice or a romantic dialogue delivered in a soft, dreamy style. To access voices supporting styles, click on the filter in the voice selector, and check the 'Styles' box.

Remember, you can always revisit and alter the voice style as you edit your actor. Moreover, you can apply different styles to different parts of your dialogue, creating a dynamic soundscape that keeps your listeners engaged.

**Creating Engaging Dialogues with AI Actors**

Now that you have your AI actors ready, it's time to make them interact! To create realistic and engaging dialogue, you can combine different AI actors, each with their unique voices and styles.

For example, let's say you're creating a dialogue between two characters for a podcast – a quirky startup founder and a cynical investor. For the founder, you might opt for a fast-paced, enthusiastic masculine voice in an upbeat style. For the investor, a slower, gruff voice in a skeptical style would suit. The contrast between the two voices creates an engaging and believable interaction that immerses your listeners in the conversation.

In another example, imagine you're crafting an audiobook for a fantasy tale with various characters – a brave knight, a wise wizard, and a cunning dragon. For the knight, a firm, heroic masculine voice with a confident style would fit the bill. The wizard could have a slow, measured voice, deep and filled with wisdom. The dragon, on the other hand, might possess a low, rumbling voice with a sinister style. It was not about age, but about the voice. Even though the girl was a teenager in this scene, her voice possessed all the characteristics that a mother’s, or rather a woman’s, possesses. What are these characteristics?

The melodic and soothing nature of a female voice also makes the audience feel more comfortable and makes listeners more inclined to trust them. Female voices are perceived as more soothing and comforting, as helpful rather than hindering.

In contrast, male voices carry a different energy. One of the differences in the male voice is its neutrality. On a subconscious level, the low-pitched male voice touches an area that scientists call the "mental gaze." As a result, men’s voices are associated with neutral information, with facts. As one military man known for his low thundering voice said: “When the enemies hear my voice they must visualize their graves with the date of their death.” This is one difference between female and male voices. One voice symbolizes the warmth of the hearth, while the other - the willingness to protect this hearth.


**What are male and female voices associated with?**

Have you noticed the voices that announce stops on subway trains? The next time you are on the subway, listen. In different countries, different voices sound on different lines or directions. **Are there any “male” and “female” topics?**

Today, when female and male roles in society are changing and consumer consciousness is adapting to new circumstances, it is impossible to talk about a clear gender boundary. However, there are some rules that are worth observing.

In most cases, it is better to use a voice that matches the voice of your target audience. The territory of a purely male voice is the exception rather than the rule. For example, men's pharmaceuticals, spare parts for a car.
When it comes to a mixed audience, female voices are preferable to male voices, although this can vary depending on societal values.
In terms of advertising, male voices are more convincing for male products, while female voices are suitable for almost any product or service. In general, female voices are more universal than male ones.
There is a purely feminine territory, for example, hygiene or decorative cosmetics. It is unusual to hear from a man about how mascara makes your eyes more expressive. The exception, of course, is if this is said by a male stylist; then he will be trusted.

Of course, all these characteristics are important, yet you can predict which information will interest a male audience more than a female one.

We just discussed the importance of knowing your audience and speaking their language. But what if you have to choose between the qualities of a voice like friendliness and trust? What if the voice sounds clear, but does not inspire confidence?

As it turns out, friendliness and trustworthiness as independent variables were statistically significant predictors of desirability (willingness to recommend). However, trustworthiness is a much stronger predictor of desirability, across all the industries.

A playful tone for a serious industry has the potential of creating pleasant surprise and helping a company stand out from its competitors. But people don’t expect car insurance to be fun. “The friendliness kind of takes away some of the credibility,” one participant pointed out. Humor is extremely risky, because when it fails, you annoy and alienate your users.

Remember to consider the concerns of your audience and their emotional state when choosing a tone. If your users are nervous patients preparing for surgery, do you really think they’d prefer a formal tone? If your users are arriving frustrated at an error page, do you think they want that error message to be a joke?


**Enthusiastic or calm?**

This is another choice to be made. And there is no need to guess. Several groups of scientists have carried out a series of experiments and obtained the same results.

In ‘[Does speaker’s voice enthusiasm affect social cue, cognitive load, and transfer in multimedia learning?](http://jultika.oulu.fi/files/nbnfi-fe2020101283783.pdf?_blank)’ study, children who listened to a reader who displayed enthusiasm had a higher recall of the contents than did children who listened to a reader who spoke in a neutral voice.

In a similar vein, [Towler and Dipboye (2001)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/11825391_Effects_of_trainer_expressiveness_organization_and_trainee_goal_orientation_on_training_outcomes?_blank) showed that a trainer who displayed high enthusiasm and expressiveness produced higher recall test scores among trainees as compared to a trainer who displayed low enthusiasm and expressiveness.

Through appealing social cues such as "friendly," "exciting," "energetic" and "warm," an enthusiastic voice  results in higher cognitive engagement among users. On the other hand, when a voice is calm and devoid of expressive cues, learners may be less motivated to invest cognitive effort given the lack of socially appealing cues.

Are there any phrases from political speeches that you remember? It can be guaranteed that these were short phrases that did not appeal to the mind, but to the heart. These phrases are typically pronounced with great emotion. Try to pronounce any of these phrases in a quiet, emotionless voice and you will see that it loses its power.

Enthusiastic cues are attention-getting stimuli that consistently gain notice among learners, as the stimuli are  ever-changing in the context of verbal and non­ verbal expressions. In contrast, an unenthusiastic teaching style tends to be unchanging and predictable; hence, learners may "tune-out" and stop paying attention to the presented learning content.


**Four dimensions of tone**

Let's try to understand the four main tone-of-voice dimensions that must be taken into account when creating a message.

Funny vs. serious: Are you trying to be humorous? Or is the subject approached in a serious way?

Formal vs. casual: Is the writing formal? Informal? Casual?

Respectful vs. irreverent: Do you approach the subject in a respectful way? Or do you take an irreverent approach?

Enthusiastic vs. matter-of-fact: Are you enthusiastic about the subject?  Or is the writing dry and matter-of-fact?

To see how these four dimensions of tone can be varied to create different effects, let’s consider a small piece of copy that almost every content team has to consider at some point — an error message.

At the core of every piece of writing is the message — the information we’re trying to communicate to our user. In this case, our message is, “An error has occurred.” Our tone will be how we communicate that message.

First, let’s try a serious, formal, respectful, and matter-of-fact error message.

“We apologize, but we are experiencing a problem.”

We’re not trying to make users laugh, or using any strong emotion in the message. It’s a fairly traditional, straightforward message.

Now, what if we tweak one of the four dimensions? Let’s make this same message a little more casual.

“We’re sorry, but we’re experiencing a problem on our end.”

The message is still serious, respectful, and matter-of-fact. But the message becomes more casual with a few small changes:

“We are” becomes “we’re.”
“Apologize” becomes “sorry.”
The addition of the expression “on our end.”

Let’s add a little more enthusiasm to the message. In this case, “enthusiasm” means emotion more than excitement, since the subject is a negative one for both the site and the user.

“Oops! We’re sorry, but we’re experiencing a problem on our end.”

Now we’ve taken the error message’s tone to casual and enthusiastic. If we add an attempt at humor and a little irreverence, we’ll have taken the same message to a totally different tone of voice.
“What did you do!? You broke it! Just kidding. We’re experiencing a problem on our end.”

Which of these versions of the same message would work best? That depends on your brand and your users.

**Your personality and your users**

Your brand personality.  If you work in a large traditional financial institution, an enthusiastic and irreverent error message might be out of character for your brand. The formal error message could work, but maybe you’ll opt for a casual message if you’ve decided that a personal, conversational feel would be best for your content.

Your users. Consider the characteristics and preferences of your users, but also their emotions and information needs for each piece of content. If your users are frustrated when they get this error message, or they see it frequently, a humorous tone might be irritating.

Remember that you can always vary your tone to fit the situation.

Keep your personality consistent, but vary the tone to fit the user’s emotional state and the topic. For example, a company’s financial report will need to sound different from that same company’s careers page targeting university students.

And always remember, you are not your user. Your predictions about how your users will react to your tone may be off. So?


**Test it!**

The text of these messages is simple, formal and short. The phrases are similar to texts from a TV show about court hearings, and in principle, they inspire confidence. Of course, the terminology is vague, we don't understand a lot, but in general, the message is perceived as authoritative.

But there is another nuance of these messages. Guess which one? Yes, accent.

Have you paid attention to what accent was used in the audio messages received on your phone? Probably not,  because the accent was “normal.” In other words, typical for the country or region where you live.

For calls to America and Canada, scammers use a middle American accent, in the UK they use a British English accent, and in Australia they use Australian voices only. It doesn’t matter that if you make the call after that initial message you’ll be talking to a person with a strong accent. You know that lots of companies have their call centers in India. What matters is that the first message has exactly the same accent that is used in your territory.

When creating these messages, scammers know that accent is a radar that quickly identifies who's theirs and who's a stranger.


**How people react to accent**

The British often frown when they hear American English. Although, it would be more correct to say they used to frown. As a global financial and cultural center, America exports its blockbuster movies and the songs of American artists fill the radio waves. So it's hard to laugh at an accent when a significant part of your life is permeated by it.

It's another matter when you are within your own cultural circle. Your own community. When you take a subway train or go to a local shop or bar. Remember ‘Inglourious Basterds’ German Accent Scene?

[Ahn (2010)](https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/ILS-11-2019-0124/full/html?skipTracking=true?_blank) compared four voices ranging from slight to heavy accents and found that they did not differently affect learning outcomes. However, it was noted that the learning outcomes were affected only when the learners had indicated beforehand that they did not like a certain accent. This observation indicates that the perceptions of learners regarding the appeal of social cues can actually affect the learning process.


**Accent and language norms**

Along with the accent, there are also the language norms adopted by a group of people or within a given area. In large metropolitan areas and cultural capitals, speech literacy and generally accepted language norms are still considered the most important criterion.

In bustling London, for example, passengers prefer short, crisp announcements over conventional designs. They understand simple “149” over “route 149” better. The transportation authorities explain that, while it is not their intention to promote poor grammar, their top priority is brevity and clarity.

Emma Hignett, the voice of London buses, was hired after being judged on a range of criteria: tone, clarity, image, appropriateness for the bus operating environment, and the type of information the voice is required to deliver. In Vienna, where the pace of life is slower, the London rule does not apply. They once tried to shorten the announcement about the next stop, but passengers complained that they felt that it was not good German, even though it's a bit shorter.

Even countries as close as Sweden and Norway have different priorities. In Sweden, names are pronounced as they are locally, while in Norway they are spoken as a foreigner would probably read them.

**How to choose the right accent for your message**

Rhythm refers to the tempo and duration of spoken phrases. It helps to make meaningful pauses, as well as to break sentences correctly. For example, by starting a paragraph, you can gradually move to the most important sentences. Read the following sentences aloud and feel the rhythm change:

Pauses are not directly related to intonation, but with their help, we also influence the audience. Temporary silence is necessary both for the listener to process the information received and for the speaker himself, who during the pauses can concentrate and rest.

Give your audience time to digest. A long-time voice actor shared this piece of advice  he received at the beginning of his career. “I'd be doing a joke, and I wouldn't be getting a laugh, and they'd say, ‘Hey, kid. You ought to say the first part of that line and then actually count to two, then say the rest of the line, and I bet you get a laugh.’  So I would take the two-count, and I would read the line, and I would get the laugh."

The effects are what makes voice acting realistic. Experiments show that we can distinguish an artificial voice if it speaks for more than one minute. The reason is that the voice behaves the same. One speed, timbre, tonality. An actor will not behave like that. He will change intonation, speed, pitch, and he will have pauses of different lengths.
